CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Stefano DiPietrantonio)-- A Putnam County woman who was brutally stabbed Monday is recovering, and she spoke with Eyewitness News Friday night about the horrific attack.

It was amazing that Betty Whiteley was even able to speak, considering the severity of her injuries. There are puncture wounds all over her chin and the side of her neck.

She also has massive bruising on her neck and staples in her head from where she was stabbed repeatedly, but she is not giving up.

"Yeah, it's another puncture wound," Whiteley said, as she pointed to the holes underneath her chin and around her neck. "I have five staples on the top of my head right at my crown."

The cuts were so deep, she said she is lucky to be alive.

"Bleeding, my brain was bleeding," she said, stonefaced. Her neck is purple and bruised.

"I'm blessed, because he didn't kill me, but he didn't kill me because it wasn't my time," she said.

Whiteley was attacked with a screwdriver in her realty office on Monday, on Charleston’s West Side. Police said Jerry Smith, who was a stranger with hard luck stories Whiteley had befriended by giving money a couple of times, had brutally beaten and stabbed her with a screwdriver.

"I was just working and he was just sitting there,” she said.

When asked if she ever felt threatened by Smith, Whitely replied, “No!”

“He leaned up against the table and said, why are you so nice?" she said.

Smith asked her for money, she said, but she had none to give him.

"Please don't be mad at me because I don't have it,” Whitely said she told him. “He just grinned at me and said ‘I'm not,’ "

Whiteley said Smith got up and started looking at books behind her. She said she could never have imagined what came next.

"His left hand was on my neck, from behind and he's squeezing, as hard as he can squeeze and he's pounding me, he's just pounding me,” she said. “The only thing I can remember saying was, ‘Oh, God! No! Oh, God, no! Oh, God, no!," she said.

Whiteley said she slid off her chair and tried to crawl under her desk, while Smith tried to pull the rings off her fingers. He was not successful in getting them off her fingers. The whole time, she was holding her hands up over her head, trying to
protect it, she said.

"I just saw blood on the floor," she said.

Her hand was wrapped up, after surgery to repair her thumb.

"That screwdriver that broke that bone, would have killed me," she said.

When Smith was asked about the incident before his arraignment, he apologized and asked for mercy.

"I'm truly sorry,” Smith said.

When asked if he should be forgiven, Smith said “I hope she will!"

Whitely said God says we should forgive.

"I may forgive, but I may not forget!,” Whiteley laughed. “I doubt very seriously I will be that kind!"
