CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Bethany Simmons, Katelyn Sykes, Doug Harlow, AP) -- The latest round of winter weather that swept across the Tri-State region Friday caused slick roadways and schools to be closed.

The snowfall that started Thursday night didn't accumulate to more than a few inches in most spots, but the plummeting temperatures made for dangerous conditions.

Meteorologist Doug Harlow said the wind chill in Charleston about 5 a.m. was 1 degree. Harlow also warned that frostbite on exposed skin can occur within 30 to 40 minutes. If you have to be outside, you are advised to bundle up and wear many layers to keep warm.

Those bitter cold temperatures and dangerous road conditions caused many schools throughout the area to be closed Friday, including Kanawha, Cabell and Putnam counties.

The National Weather Service reported a temperature of 7 degrees in Beckley at 5 a.m. Friday. High temperatures in the teens were forecast for many areas, with wind chill factors as low as 15 to 20 degrees below zero in the morning.

Some areas in the eastern part of the state had up to 6 inches of snow. The weather service said light, blowing snow was expected to continue in some areas Friday morning before tapering off later in the day. Winter weather advisories and warnings were issued for most of the state.

Roads in downtown Charleston appeared to be slushy while secondary roads remained covered in snow early Friday. The interstates in the area also are snowy and icy in spots, but for the most part clear. Crews were out plowing and laying salt, but motorists were being urged to use extra caution while traveling.

Meanwhile, the only flight out of Yeager Airport in Charleston Friday was the 7:55 a.m. flight to Detroit. All other departing flights from the airport to Atlanta, Chicago, Washington and Charlotte were canceled.
