CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Jeff Morris, Bob Aaron) -- Charleston police said a suspect in a New Year's Day shooting has been taken into custody.

Michael Underwood, 30, of Beckley turned himself into police about 1:25 p.m. Wednesday, Lt. Steve Cooper said. Underwood was being sought in connection with a shooting that occurred about 2 a.m. in the 600 block of Virginia Street in a hallway located between the Ramada Inn in Charleston and Recovery Sports Grill.

Charles Scott, 23, of Charleston was wounded in that incident.

Underwood was arraigned in Kanawha County Magistrate Court and his bond was set at $250,000. He was transported to the South Central Regional Jail.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Taisha Walker, Bethany Simmons, Bob Aaron) – Charleston police have released the name of the man seriously injured after a shooting early Wednesday.

John Charles Scott, 23, of Charleston was shot about 2 a.m., Sgt. Tony Hazelett said. It happened in the 600 block of Virginia Street in a hallway located between the Ramada Inn in Charleston and Recovery Sports Grill.

Hazlett said police are looking for Michael Underwood, 30, of Beckley in connection with the New Year's Day incident. Hazelett said Underwood would face malicious wounding charges once he is arrested.

Police said Scott and three other people were in the hallway, eating a pizza and waiting on a taxi. Underwood and four people then entered the hallway, police said, and Scott's girlfriend entered a short time later. Police said Scott's girlfriend and Underwood's girlfriend then had a disagreement over a phone number, and Underwood and Scott tried to break it up. The two men got into a fight, Underwood pulled out an automatic pistol and shot Scott once, police said. The bullet passed through the victim's left shoulder and went into his leg.

Scott was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital for surgery. He received serious injuries. Police said Underwood took off in a vehicle.

Law enforcement officers were interviewing witnesses and watching surveillance tapes Wednesday to gather information for their investigation. Police said they believe alcohol played a role in the incident, and other people who were involved in the altercation could possibly face charges.
