WINFIELD, W.Va. (Katelyn Sykes) -- Some people living in Putnam County might have noticed a change in their mailing address without official notice from the U.S. Postal Service.

The county's Office of Emergency Services is being flooded with phone calls from people with a range of concerns, some of which are dealing with people who are getting mail to their house with a different house number. Jason Owens, deputy director for Putnam 911, said he has received hundreds of phone calls and numerous visitors to his office about the county's 911 mapping project.

"The only way your address has been changed is if you get a notice from the U.S. Postal Service that says here is your new address," he said.

When the county's 911 mapping project got under way 10 years ago, every address in the county, not just rural ones, were slated to change to meet state and national standards. But years later, leaders decided not all addresses needed updated.

"If you're receiving junk mail, or your bills have changed, yours might not have necessarily have changed because it goes into the post office database and from that Fedex, all the junk mail places, bulk mail, they all buy that stuff from the post office," he said. "They may have got the data before it was changed or before there was final approval on it."

Owens advises that even though his office is flooded with calls, if this happens to you, pick up the phone. Officials want to make sure your information is correct, so if there is ever an emergency, help can find you.
