JACKSON, Ohio (Dave Benton) -- A new law goes into effect in Ohio on Jan. 1 regarding dog breeding facilities.

Owners of Trinity Labs Dog Training Facility in Jackson, Ohio say their business is not a puppy mill, but they will soon have to adhere to a new law requiring dog breeders to get a special license if they produce at least nine litters and at least 60 dogs in a year.

The law also sets standards for housing and care of puppies. Silena Robinson with Trinity Labs says it's crucial to check out the puppies parents' medical history before buying a dog. "Always ask for a veterinarian recommendation, we're always happy to give out information and she's always happy to talk to customers. What the vet says about your dogs will give you a very good idea if it's a reputable breeder. Also, you want someone who will let you come to their premises and see at least the mother."

Robinson says the new law will require a permanent identification chip implant, which is good. But the downside she says is the over-inspection. Robinson says a facility could go through 7-8 inspections a year.
