Kanawha County deputies are still trying to figure out who fired dozens of shots outside of a bar and restaurant in Cross Lanes.
The private club license at Appetizers has been suspended for 10 days, which means they will not be allowed to serve alcohol.
Carlo Gray, 22, was shot in the leg early Thursday morning and taken to the hospital.
Ed Prichard's wife works next door to appetizer's restaurant and lounge. He's in the area himself quite frequently and is not surprised at the violence that erupted there.
"When you see restaurants, fine,” he said. “When you see restaurants and lounge, that means there's drinking. That means that there's going to be drinking, getting out of their heads, losing self-control, and pulling out a gun or knife."
And that's exactly what deputies said happened along Goff Mountain Road. A private Christmas party was under way inside, when a fight broke out, spilling into the parking lot.
"A call to 911 gave an estimate to about 50 people that were in the parking lot fighting," Cpl. B.D. Humphreys, with the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office, said.
Shots then rang out, and evidence of just how many shots were fired came to light when the sun rose. Windows were shot out of several cars and nearby businesses. Shattered glass lined the parking lot and a bloody handprint was left behind.
Deputies believe multiple guns were used in the shooting. In one car alone, five bullet holes could be counted.
Nitro police said they pulled over a van fleeing the scene with its window's shot out. Inside they said found Carlo Gray, 22, who had suffered a gunshot wound to his leg.
"I saw a group of people running up the street and then, a few minutes later, I heard all of those shots," one woman, who did not want to be identified, said.
The woman lives in a residential neighborhood behind appetizers. She said the problems that have stemmed from the establishment have been one after another since they opened up a bar underneath the restaurant. She hopes something will be done.
"I wish that it was safer for the people around it, especially the people that live near the restaurant," she said.
The bar owner issued a statement Thursday afternoon, which read:
"Shep's Lounge and its sister facility, Appetizer's Restaurant, are family-owned establishments and Cross Lanes is our community. We are as saddened and alarmed by these intrusive and irresponsible actions as our neighbors surely are, and will work with law enforcement to make certain all parties are held accountable for their actions. Though this was an isolated event and not consistent with any past occurrences, Shep's Lounge will review its policy on private parties and take any actions we feel are in the best interest of the safety and welfare of our patrons."
Deputies are still trying to find witnesses who left the area. Anyone with information that could help them is asked to call 304-357-0169.
