Wednesday was a slow day for travel. Less people were on the roads as more of them spent time at home with family.

Denise Hanson traveled nearly 10 hours from Atlanta to be with friends for the Christmas holiday.

"It was great," Hanson said. "We had 40 minutes of traffic, at one point there was one accident. That was it. It was a smooth sailing drive."

Hanson was one of few people out on Christmas day. She spent the morning playing with her 13-week-old puppy at a dog park on Charleston's East End.

"Our puppy was energetic this morning," Hanson said. "She's been stuck inside for the last few days and she was just ready to play."

It was scarce finding a car in sight or a business with its doors open, unless you had to gas up. Travel experts say Christmas travel will be lite on the roads and at airports as most people are unwrapping gifts and spending time with family.

"It's really lite today," said Jake Stout, toll shift foreman for the West Virginia Turnpike. "We're expecting a big rush tomorrow and over the weekend where everybody is going back home. But today, it's just stationary and wait for tomorrow."

More than 30,000 people are expected to travel on the West Virginia Turnpike Friday. Since Christmas falls mid-week, more travelers might consider prolonging their trek home by a few days.

"They might not go back until Friday," Hanson said. "There might not be people going back until Monday - to get the whole weekend."

No matter when you decide hit the road state troopers just want to make sure you do it safely.
