A group of super heroes, and a pretty super mom and her daughter are helping make Christmas a little brighter for some very sick children.

You might be familiar with a group called "Heroes 4 Higher," back in August, we told you how the leader Batman even helped rescue a cat from a burning house in Milton. But the group's main mission, is to give anti-bullying talks in schools and bring cheer to children who are hospitalized.

When nine-year-old Courtney Pickens and her mom heard their message, it really set in, and they decided super heroes could help them do something special--for sick kids this holiday season.

On Christmas Eve morning, Samantha Pickens and her daughter Courtney are unloading a car full of presents, but these stockings aren't for their own family, they're gifts for kids who can't be at home for the holidays because they're hospitalized.

"I wanted to make them happy for Christmas," said Courtney Pickens with 'Stockings 4 Heroes'.

At just nine years old, Courtney learned a valuable lesson from some super hero friends with the group "Heroes 4 Higher" and wanted to pay it forward. Her mom Samantha thought by sacrificing a little money from their own Christmas savings, and with a little help from Batman and crew, 40 stockings would be doable. But the community's generosity was overwhelming, allowing them to give out 240 stockings to kids at three area hospitals and the Huntington Ronald McDonald House.

"It's really opened our eyes and hearts to, you know, it's not all about us. It's about taking away that moment of worry, that moment of fear, and giving them a reason to smile during Christmas," said Samantha Pickens.

And their kindness certainly did just that. Madison Edwards is 27-weeks pregnant and had symptoms of pre-term labor. So Madison, her mom and little brother are staying at the Ronald McDonald house as she gets medical care nearby. Having the super visit Tuesday, is certainly helping brighten their holiday.

"It's really sweet and it means a lot to me because I'm far from home and them showing up to help me and come see me means a lot," Edwards said.

The families receiving the stockings are impressed by the group's generosity and that a little girl is the one who made this all happen.

"It's amazing to have people out here that are willing to just do things for people. I mean it's crazy because you don't see good people anymore," said Kearstin Coleman.

For the Pickens family and the superheroes., it's well worth time away from their own families on the holiday, learning it is definitely better to give than to receive.

The Pickens family is working to get Stockings 4 Heroes designated as a non-profit organization and will continue their efforts not just on Christmas. They plan to work with the super heroes to provide goody bags to kids in the hospital on Valentine's Day, Easter, and Halloween as well.
