Kanawha County deputies continue to investigate a deadly crash that occurred along Interstate 64 on Christmas Eve.
Deputies said John Charles Miller, 65, of Indianapolis, Indiana died in the accident.
A semi and trailer from Dolin Trucking of Dunbar, driven by Michael Powell of Winfield was merging or had merged onto the Interstate going west at Institute when a double trailer from the Roadway Corporation struck the Dolin Trucking Company truck in the rear, Captain Sean Crosier said.
Powell was take to Thomas Memorial Hospital for minor injuries. Miller, the driver of the Roadway truck was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Dolin truck/trailer sustained moderate damage and cab of the Roadway truck was demolished, Crosier said.
The Accident Reconstruction Unit of the Kanawha Sheriff's Office was working to determine the point of impact and possible contributing factors Tuesday morning.
Interstate 64 westbound from Dunbar to Cross Lanes remained closed while towing services worked to remove the trucks and debris, Crosier said. Deputies expect the roadway to reopen possibly by noon Tuesday.
Traffic was being diverted from I-64 at the Dunbar exit onto Route 25 where motorists can access I-64 from Goff Mountain Road or at the Nitro entrance.
One driver died after a massive accident along Interstate 64 in Kanawha County on Christmas Eve.
The accident happened in the westbound lanes of I-64 near Institute about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday.
Investigators said a tractor-trailer and coal truck were involved in the accident.
The driver of the tractor-trailer died at the scene, deputies said. At least one other person was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
Kanawha County deputies continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
A massive accident in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 just past the Institute exit has the road shut down.
We know that two tractor trailers and several cars are involved in the wreck. It happened at around 5:45 Tuesday morning.
Dispatchers have confirmed that at least one person was killed and that several other people were injured.
We have a crew at the scene and will get the latest information when it becomes available.
