Prayers For Alecia

Winfield , Putnam County , West Virginia

Christmas time brings families together every year, and, this year, more than any before, the family of Alecia Oldham has come together to help each other get through a difficult time.

These past few weeks have been a rollercoaster for the Oldham family and, with the holidays coming up, they are even more appreciative of the community outreach the family and Alecia have received.

There's only one way the Oldham family can describe the past week.

“A rollercoaster,” Alecia’s aunt, Kayla Oldham, said. “It's been up and down since the moment we found out. Things have just been crazy."

Alecia, 12, is in seventh grade at Winfield Middle School.

On Dec. 11, she was taken from the middle school to the hospital by ambulance.

Hours later, Alecia and her family found out she had a brain tumor and it was cancerous.

"When she found out about it, she was in great spirits," Kayla Oldham said. "I don't even think she cried. I think she just took it as 'OK, we do we gotta do next, and get it taken care of?' "

The very next day, Alecia underwent brain surgery to remove the tumor in the back of her head.

The surgery lasted for nearly eight hours, but family said, after what seemed like an eternity, the doctor came out smiling and said Alecia did just fine.

It was a relief to the family.

"The family is doing really well," Kayla Oldham. "We have a really large family from both sides, so they're all just making sure they are there and supporting her."

And with Christmas just around the corner for Alecia, family means the world, but there's one thing she wants.

"She wants to go home," Kayla Oldham said. "She's 12. Every little girl doesn't want to be in the hospital. They want to go home."

So to keep Alecia's spirits up, her family has set up a Facebook page, "Prayers For Alecia."

It's a way family, friends and the community can stay updated and interact with her.

It's also a way to share one request: Christmas cards.

The cards that will not only make the young girl's Christmas a little brighter, but will also lift her spirits.

"When she's able to really sit down and look at all of it, she is just going to love it," Kayla Oldham said. "She really is. And that's all that we're doing it for - to help her out, make her happy and make her see that she is loved by so many people."

Anyone wanting to send Alecia a Christmas card can mail it to:
