Route 85 In Boone Remains Reopens; Power Back On

A Boone County roadway reopened Thursday evening after it was closed for hours due to an accident that occurred that morning.

Route 85 in Madison reopened about 6:30 p.m. The roadway was closed for nearly 10 hours while crews worked to fix a power pole that had been knocked down.

Nearly 1,000 Appalachian Power customers were without service for much of Thursday. All of those customers had service restored by Friday.

Route 85 remained closed Thursday afternoon as utility crews worked to restore service to customers after a vehicle knocked down a power pole and lines across the roadway near Madison.

At 4:45 p.m., Route 85 near WV 17 was still shut down and had been closed for eight hours, the West Virginia Department of Transportation said. Appalachian Power reported on its website that 350 customers remained without service. Nearly 1,000 customers were left without service after the accident happened.

About 1,000 Appalachian Power customers in Boone County were without service after a vehicle struck a power pole on Route 85 in Madison.

Jeri Matheney, communications director for the power company, said the estimated time for service to be restored to those customers is 4 p.m. Thursday. Route 85 is closed while crews repair the damage.

A vehicle struck the power pole Thursday morning, downing the pole and lines across the roadway. A fire hydrant also was knocked off its foundation.

911 said deputies found the driver who left the scene after the wreck. It was unclear whether the driver had been taken into custody.

Appalachian Power and Frontier Communications were reporting Thursday that work to restore service in Boone County in the Route 85 area could take all day.

The wreck forced the closure of the road and several schools were sending students home early because of the accident. Power and phone service was knocked out to businesses in the area.

Power company officials said the power pole that was knocked down must be replaced, and two poles that were located next to it also need repairs. A fire hydrant also was knocked off its foundation.

Appalachian Power''s website said 998 customers in Boone County were without service as of 10:35 a.m. It was unclear whether all of those outages are related to the Route 85 wreck.

The West Virginia Department of Transportation said at about 10:30 a.m. that Route 85 was closed from Josephine Avenue to WV 17 for about two hours while crews make repairs.

Several Boone County schools are closing early Thursday after a vehicle struck a power pole, downing the pole and power lines and forcing the closure of Route 85, 911 said.

Emergency dispatchers said Madison Elementary School closed at 9:30 a.m., and Madison Middle School and Scott High School were scheduled to close at 10:30 a.m..
