Ona , Cabell County , West Virginia
A parent of a child who attends a Cabell County school where a gas leak occurred on Friday is speaking out.
The school, Ona Elementary, said it was really not a big deal, but the parent is outraged over how the gas leak was handled by the district
The school said the natural gas leak was quickly corrected, and no students were in danger, but that is not how this father, Chris Toney, sees it.
"I disagree,” he said. “My kid had to be treated at a medical facility. If the kids had to be treated, apparently, they were in some hazardous conditions."
A spokesperson with Cabell County Schools said the leak was pinhole sized, and the students were isolated to the gym until repairs could be made.
Toney's son is fine now, but after the gas leak, was nauseous and had a headache.
"We took our kid to Barboursville urgent care, and he was treated for natural gas exposure," Toney said.
Toney has the paperwork to prove it.
Jedd Flowers, with Cabell County Schools, said the incident has been blown out of proportion.
“We've learned a lesson from this,” he said. “It wasn't a real crisis like situation...but because of the social media, it became one."
School was not let out early on Friday.
Activities at the school should go on as normal Monday.
