A high school coach ended up in hot water after a fight on the basketball court Saturday night.
The incident took place during a tournament in Chapmanville, when Scott and Logan high schools were playing.
Police said a fight broke out between the two teams and Coach Mark Hatcher intervened.
After the game, Hatcher found himself arrested.
Hatcher wouldn't say much about the assault and battery charges filed against him after the fight broke out Saturday night. During the fourth quarter a fight broke out on the court, police said.
Witnesses said when a police officer pushed Hatcher, he allegedly pushed the officer back and verbally assaulted him. Police arrested Hatcher after the game. A woman who wanted to remain anonymous said hatcher is well-liked and did nothing wrong.
“I believe he was right,” she said. “ can't say he was right, not being in his shoes, you know. To be pushed. I'd push back myself. That's just human nature, in the heat of the moment. Mark is a good guy.
Hatcher didn't have much to say about the fight or his arrest.
He never went to jail after the incident.
After appearing in magistrate court, he posted bond and was released.
A Logan County High School basketball coach is facing several criminal charges after a brawl breaks out during a game.
Chapmanville police officers say a fight broke out between players of Scott High School and Logan High School during Saturday night's game.
They say Coach Mark Hatcher, from Logan High School, tried to intervene. We are told a police officer pushed him back and that's when Hatcher is accused of pushing the police officer and verbally assaulting him.
Hatcher was arrested after the game. He is charged with battery on a police officer and assault on a police officer.
Nobody was hurt during the fight. No word if the players will face any charges.
