Many people are still stranded in their homes or staying at a motel after being rescued following a mudslide in Logan County.

It’s certainly not something anyone wants to deal with, especially with Christmas only 11 days away.

But victims of the major mudslide said they are just going to make the best of it.

"Hopefully, we get home before Christmas, but, if not, I guess we'll have Christmas together as a community here," Robert Caldwell said.

Caldwell is one of roughly 40 people forced out of their homes after the mudslide Monday in the Madison Creek area of the county.

More than 110 people were trapped when the slide first happened.

But with the help of Logan and Man fire departments, people have made their way out of the mess.

Caldwell has been at the hotel with his two sons since Tuesday.

Now he's doing all he can to help the nearly 70 people still stuck behind the slide, but not everyone wants to leave.

"There are still some who will not leave their homes,” Caldwell said. “I don't look for them to leave their homes unless something drastic happens, and I hope it doesn't come to that."

For Caldwell, the drastic scenario became a reality Friday night when his grandmother fell, hurting her hip and called for an ambulance.

"It was a long process,” he said. “It took about an hour and forty five minutes to get her from her house to the hospital."

Caldwell said that same route to the hospital usually takes about 30 minutes, but because of the mudslide and the terrain they have to travel to just get into the community, you can add over an hour in travel time.

For now, his grandmother is staying with him and other family members at the hotel until the mudslide in cleaned up.

"We may not be home for Christmas, but we're staying hopeful and everybody's staying in high spirits trying to get there,” Caldwell said. “I'm proud of Logan and the place that we live."

Those who did come out of the affected area are also being provided food and transportation.

The Department of Transportation is repairing the road, but it will take about three weeks to get things back to normal.
