Alum Creek , Lincoln County , West Virginia

A dangerous situation is becoming a headache for some people in Lincoln County.

On Dec. 6, a section of the Coal River Road in Alum Creek started slipping. Barriers now stand in front of a piece of the road, and giant cracks are visible in the pavement. The surface below is gone.

“It started as a slide, then it started to slip down. The road started to crack, so it had to be closed,” Brent Walker, spokesman for the West Virginia Department of Transportation, said. “We have designs in place, and engineers and surveyors are out there taking a look at what to do next.”

For residents, the situation has created more than just a few headaches. The section of the Coal River road is in ruins and is breaking away and sliding down the hill into the river below. While it's only a 350 foot section of pavement, the detour to get around is 10 miles.

Chris Miller and his family live a mile on the back side of the broken road.

“We have to come in and park on the other side and walk to the house,” Miller said. “It's a chilly situation, too, -- a cold walk to get out to work and to get the kids to school. If there's a two-hour delay or anything, the buses do not come down here. We have to find a way to get there. They'll come down the other end, but if the water's up, we're trapped.”

While state officials said there is no question the road will get fixed, it's one of about 20 slides in the state and repairing the road won't happen overnight. Walker said the section of road could be closed for several weeks.

For the Millers, the repairs can't get finished soon enough.

“Please get out here and fix it,” Chris Miller said.
