School Closing Protocol

Huntington , Cabell County , West Virginia

Some school districts in West Virginia were forced to close Tuesday morning at the last minute as roads became slick in rural parts of our region.

The last minute decision in Cabell County was frustrating for some parents like Brian Lewis. "My daughter thinks it's a 2 hour delay and she's getting ready and it comes back that school's closed and I don't know, I hate to sound like some old geezer but you know when I was a kid you had to have the snow up to here to get out of school."

Jedd Flowers is the Communications Director for Cabell County Schools and says making the decision to close is a last resort. "We have to make decision based on two things, safety of students and staff, and we have to look at are we meeting that mandate of 180 days of instruction. So, the days of just saying the night before 'Oh I think I'll just close school tomorrow to be safe' are kind of over."

Flowers says it's better to be safe than sorry. A bus in Wayne County crashed heading back to the garage after a delay was cancelled and schools closed. Fortunately, no kids were on board. The driver hit a patch of ice along Rt. 152 3 miles south of Wayne. The rear end slid and damaged the bumper and side of the bus. It's likely totaled and luckily the driver walked away without any injuries.

Flowers says, "Weather is not consistent, sometimes you have snow in Huntington and none in Barboursville vice versa. It's always different, so we have to look at every situation and make a judgement call."
