Sinkhole Problems
Eyewitness News Photo

Nitro , Kanawha County , West Virginia

This is an all-too familiar sight to people living along Broadway Avenue in Nitro. A large sinkhole caused by an old wooden water intake line that is estimated to be about a hundred years old.

This hole is just the latest in a number of cave-ins the abandoned pipe has caused.

"They've just deteriorated and now our front lawns and sidewalks driveways are sinking," Bettie Cavender of Nitro said.

Sections of new sidewalk and driveways pepper both sides of Broadway Avenue, marking spots where sinkholes formed and had to be filled.

Kim Painter has lived her for 30 years and has had to have his property repaired a number of times. Right now, a sinking driveway and loose sidewalk are signs that more sinkholes are coming.

"It's a nuisance on driveways and the fear of pulling your car across your driveway," Painter said. "I'd like to get that fixed and get that fear taken away."

The intersection of Broadway Avenue and West 11th Street is another trouble spot. A dip in the road where the line is located shows where the earth is giving way, taking the street down with it.

"It's really a hazard to people around because you really don't know underneath the ground," A.J. Hill, Nitro's Director of Public Works said. "I mean, what's going to happen? I mean, it could collapse at any time, unaware of. There are a lot of kids in the neighborhood, especially when it runs through your city park and your baseball field, center field and stuff like that we've had to fix numerous times on our own.

Hill says if the intersection gets any worse he may have to block it off until repairs can be made to make sure it doesn't collapse.

A spokeswoman for West Virginia-American Water says the company is well aware of the abandoned pipe and makes prompt repairs to any sinkholes as soon as they are reported.
