Plans to build a skate park at Huntington's Harris Riverfront are one step closer to becoming reality.

"I think the skate park is going to be a great thing for the city," Don Kleppe of Planning and Development said. . "It's something folks wanted for a really long time. Some of those kids are now grownups, and we're getting to fruition on it. It means a destination point in Harris Riverfront Park. It's a new focus and bring people further into the park."

Council gave Mayor Steve Williams the authority to sign off on funding for phase one of the project. The city has $118,000 and ready to break ground in late spring.

The city will enter into an agreement with the state's development office to receive a $50,000 grant for the skate park. Construction will be in three phases. The city will put the project out for bids in the next couple months.

Council also discussed amending the anti-discrimination policy in the workplace. Currently, anyone who is gay and lesbian and works within the city limits of Huntington could legally be fired.

Justin Murdock of Fairness West Virginia said the policy "will bring us into line with other cities and hopefully the state. Right now, if your employer finds out your gay, lesbian or transgendered or whatever, the case may be you can be fired for that reason even though you're performing your job just as well as your co-workers."

Charleston and Morgantown have ordinances that protect gays and lesbians from discrimination on the job. Huntington City Council only discussed the anti-discrimination policy. The public will be allowed to comment at the next meeting in two weeks.
