Snow didn’t scare away those hardy souls for the Winter Series in Charleston over the weekend. Runners and walkers came out in full force to get a little exercise and donate to a great cause.
Organizers said there was a record turnout for the 5K (3.1 mile) run with 401 finishers and the 3,000-meter (1.8-mile) walk with 73 finishers.

Many participants donated unwrapped toys that were then donated to the Tower of Toys drive spearheaded by Eyewitness News. The toys will be given to Union Mission in Charleston for lots of deserving kids.
If you missed the first Winter Series event, there is still time to get involved. There are two more races scheduled:
Sunday, Jan. 5, 1 p.m. 4,000-meter (2.4 miles) walk; 2 p.m. 8,000-meter (4.9 miles) run.
Sunday, Feb. 2 – 1 p.m. 5,000-meter (3.1 miles) walk; 2 p.m. 10,000-meter (6.2 miles) run.
Participants in the Winter Series not only do something great for their health, but they receive a few perks. Runners and walkers who finish all three events receive a hooded sweatshirt. In the first two runs, awards will be presented to the top male and female and in the following age divisions – 14 and under; 15-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69; 70 and over; and wheelchair. After the third race, awards will be presented in the same categories based on cumulative times for all three races.
No age group awards will be offered for the walks, but the top three males and females will win awards in the first two races with awards presented in the same categories after the third race based on cumulative times for all three events.
Volunteers who help will all three races will receive a hoody.
The flat, easy course is marked and starts at 31st Street and Virginia Avenue in Kanawha City and continues onto Kanawha Avenue before finishing in the same location. Traffic control will be provided at major intersections.
