Winter Weather Accidents

Charleston , Kanawha County , West Virginia

Winter weather has hit the area; covering roadways with water, ice and snow.

Metro 911 said there were multiple accidents Sunday morning throughout Kanawha County; including on Corridor G, Interstate 77 northbound near Leon Sullivan, Dupont Avenue, Interstate 64 west of Institute and on Frame Road.

In Putnam County, crews responded to at least 20 reported accidents throughout the county. One of those accidents was on the Route 34/Route 35 interchange.

The driver of one of the tractor trailers said a car slid on a patch of ice and crossed into the paths of his truck and another tractor trailer causing a three car wreck. One person was taken to the hospital.

A layer of ice on the bottom and top of the snow made even small hills tough in Cross Lanes. About 25 weather-related wrecks were reported in Kanawha County by mid-afternoon. Ice, slush, snow and ponding water all posed travel dangers as the weather shifted from snow to rain. The contrast to last week's warm weather wasn't lost on people digging out.

The snow was very heavy and carried a lot of moisture. The Kanawha Valley saw 4 to 6 inches falling in places and up to 8 inches reported elsewhere north of Interstate 64.

In Cabell County; dispatchers said were several accidents overnight, but nobody was hurt. They were asking people to use precaution while traveling and to only attempt to drive on the roadways if it is necessary.

The National Weather Service said there is a flood watch for Kanawha and surrounding areas from 1 p.m. Sunday through Monday afternoon. Most locations were transitioning into rain Sunday afternoon and it was expected to rain through Sunday night and early Monday, resulting in potentially renewed flooding.

Meanwhile, the winter weather forced Ashland Community and Technical College to cancel the Sunday performance of their Christmas play. No word was available as to whether or not it would be rescheduled.
