Three-peat champs-- that's what Wayne football players are aiming for as they head out to the AA state championship game in Wheeling Friday night against Bridgeport.

The football team got a spirited sendoff Thursday, stopping off to pick up signs, shake hands, and sign autographs for students at Lavalette and Wayne Elementary schools.

"I love going to the elementary schools with the little kids because they're just so excited," WHS cheerleader Autumn Booton said. "It's so fun."

They finished with a pep rally at the high school. Coach Tom Harmon said the community support they get from everyone in Wayne is second to none.

"When you see that that many people care, it means something to you, especially when you get out there and you start playing," Harmon said.

The players said they will carry the support all the way to Wheeling. Senior Curtis Followay said it's humbling.

"It really is having all the fans and all the backup from the county and just all the fans that travel up there to support you. I mean that's a big deal," he said.

There's also a 36-game winning streak at stake. The Wayne football team has tied a record set by what used to be Ansted High back in the early 1970s. One more win could set a new record.

"You know, whether we win 37 in a row, or we don't win 37 in a row, it's still an accomplishment. Just the fact that our program has put together that many victories without having a problem, that's pretty impressive, and that's something to be proud of," Harmon said.

Kickoff for the game is 7:30 p.m. Friday.
