More Volunteers Needed

Tuesday marks a National Day of Giving. It's a day to give to local charities, charities such as the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army, which is located on Tennessee Avenue in Charleston, needs the community's help in raising $250,000 by Christmas Eve. To do that, the organization needs more than 13 people out ringing bells and collecting donations in red kettles. Maj. Darrell Kingsbury, area commander for the Salvation Army, said more than 30 volunteers are needed to finish the Christmas campaign strong.

"People think it's frightening and scary doing something they're not used to doing, but when they get out there and you get to see the money start coming in, it becomes a lot of fun," Kingsbury said. "They find they have a great time, and they're really doing things to help. It's a great, great time for them."

The area commander said the community has been generous in the past, and he is confident people will tap into their giving spirits to provide gifts for 1,500 kids in Kanawha, Putnam, Clay and Roane counties.

Volunteers interested in donating their time can contact the Salvation Army at 304-343-4548.
