Holiday shoppers across the country took time out to support local businesses for Small Business Saturday.

Small businesses make up more than 96 percent of all employers in West Virginia.

American Express started "Small Business Saturday as a holiday shopping event three years ago, hoping to encourage people to support mom and pop operations in their home towns during one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year.

Small businesses in Charleston were glad to participate and to have the community's support.

"It's a small community,” Elisa Payne, of Eggplant, said. “We love Charleston . That's one of the wonderful things about Charleston is it’s a small community. When people come in, we know their name, we know their kids. When we all work together in our small community, then we can give back to it."

Main Street West Virginia encourages people to continue to "shop small" at hometown stores throughout the holiday season to help boost the local economy.
