"Laughter on the 23rd Floor" is a look behind the show business curtain. Written by Neil Simon, it's based on his time spent as a writer on the 1950s Sid Caesar programs, "Your Show Of Shows" and "Caesar's Hour."
"It's the last show of the ARTS 2013 season and we wanted to end on a high note," Mike Murdock, the play's director said. "I think it's Neil Simon's funniest play. It's a small cast so we're doing it here in the ballroom instead of on the main stage, where the audience will be right on top of us."
The action takes place in the writers room of "The Max Prince Show." The funnymen are constantly trying to one-up each other and get the biggest laugh while impressing Max himself. But, they also have to battle the network, which wants to "dumb down" the program so that the average American will understand the humor.
"It's just the comedy of it all," Dylan Cook (Max Prince) said. "It's really whacky. It's a lot of fun. I get to punch holes in the walls so it's a lot of fun to do."
Some legendary names in the history of comedy are lampooned, including Caesar, Mel Brooks and Larry Gelbart.
"A little more, I would say, adult themed than I would have thought a Neil Simon show would be," Bryan Cook (Kenny Franks) said. "But it's hysterical and it's actually a little bittersweet."
The play contains some adult language. ARTS recommends parental discretion for young children.
