The former assistant chief of a Boone County fire department resigned after being accused of spending money that was not his.
Chief Jim Nelson described his former co-worker, who is now under investigation, as the firefighter and man you could always count on. He said he's disappointed in the alleged senseless actions leading to the firefighter's resignation.
"Nobody likes a black eye, but we've got one,” Nelson said. “And it'll heal, but we've got work to do to heal it."
Former Assistant Chief, Larry Nunnery, of the Madison Volunteer Fire Department, is under investigation, accused of misusing the station's credit card.
"I think that it's very terrible that someone would misuse something that's for the public's use, as in protecting our homes and the people," Steven Moore of Madison said.
Firefighters said Nunnery admitted to making inappropriate purchases with the station's credit card, purchases caught in an internal investigation by the fire department.
The investigation has since been handed over to West Virginia State Police.
No word on what exactly Nunnery bought or how much he spent.
"The amount of money that is in question is not much at all,” Nunnery said. “I think some report somewhere I saw was $4,000. I doubt that it's even half that."
Nelson said Nunnery has been an asset to the fire department for more than 20 years.
And while the accusations may reflect poorly on the department, the public said they still have faith in their first responders.
"It's very important for our firemen to have people available to fight fires and to have the fire department available for the people," he said.
Nunnery resigned from the fire department earlier this week.
