Slick road conditions caused several accidents throughout the region Wednesday night, sending a total of four people to the hospital. One person was killed.
It was a dangerous evening commute, as a day of snow and falling temperatures combining to create hazardous conditions on Thanksgiving eve.
“It’s never a good time to have an accident, but during the holiday season, it’s even more tragic,” Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas said.
In Cabell County, a tragic accident the day before Thanksgiving occurred when two cars collided along W.Va. Route 2 near the Cabell- Mason county line.
Emergency workers had to use the jaws of life to get two people out of one of the cars. A person in the second car was killed
Traffic was backed up in both directions for more than an hour as crews worked to reconstruct the fatal accident.
"It is very frustrating,” motorist Valerie Tomlinson said. “You're sitting here. You want to be with your family, but, at the same time, your heart breaks, because you see what is going on up above us. You know how hard it is on anybody else, so my heart breaks for them."
In Kanawha County, the slick roads led to several accidents Wednesday evening.
On Interstate 79 near Clendenin, a truck heading southbound lost control, went into the median and crashed in the northbound lanes.
One man was thrown from the truck. A woman had to be cut out of the vehicle.
Both were taken to the hospital.
Black ice is being blamed, and workers with the DOT are urging people to slow down.
“Everybody is wanting to get to their families for Thanksgiving,” Chuck Runyon said. “If they would just slow down a little bit for weather conditions. I'd rather be an hour late for dinner, than not get there at all.”
The name of the person killed in the Cabell County crash has not been released. The other two victims in that crash were in serious condition when they were taken to the hospital.
