Authorities said a Webster County man and his niece are fortunate to be alive after the ATV they were riding was swept downstream while attempting to cross the Sugar Creek River.

Jimmie Hines, 42, and his niece, Amy Casteel, 36, were on their way Tuesday night to visit some acquaintances in the Sugar Creek area of Webster County, said Dale Hall, deputy director of Webster County's Office of Emergency Services and 911. The two were on an ATV and were going to cross the Sugar Creek River over to the residence. When they realized the water was too deep, they attempted to back out of the river, but they were swept downstream by the high waters from Tuesday’s rain.

The two were separated in the darkness, and Hines said it took him more than an hour to get out of the water and get to a residence to get help. The call came into Webster County 911 at about 10 p.m.

Shortly after arriving at the scene, some members of the Diana Volunteer Fire Department found Casteel about a quarter mile downstream from where she was swept away, clinging to some debris that had washed up on the river's edge on the other side.

Hall said Casteel was conscious and screaming for help. The Diana, Hacker Valley and Webster Springs fire departments then set up for a swift water rescue to bring Casteel back to safety and treatment by EMS personnel.

The Webster Springs swift water rescue team put a rescue swimmer in the water to gain access to the victim and to secure overhead rigging to bring her back across the river. Casteel was then transported to Webster County Memorial Hospital where she was treated for hypothermia.

Agencies that responded were Webster County OES, Diana Fire Department, Hacker Valley Fire Department, Webster Springs Fire EMS and Webster Springs Fire Department's swift water rescue team.
