Several Democrats have received early endorsements for the 2014 primary election from the AFT-West Virginia’s Committee on Political Education.

The group met Nov. 15 in Morgantown and voted to endorse Natalie Tennant for U.S. Senate, Glen Gainer for U.S. House of Representatives, 1st District, and Congressman Nick Rahall for U.S. House of Representatives, 3rd District.

“As West Virginians, it is our responsibility to support candidates who understand our culture, our challenges, and the needs of our people,” AFT-WV President Christine Campbell said in a news release.
“In order to rebuild trust in the federal government, we must stand united behind those who truly represent our issues. We need elected officials who fight for public education, economic development and protections against those who want to capitalize on our natural resources with little benefit to our citizens.

“We cannot allow multi-national corporations to control those elected to represent our interests. AFT-WV supports home-grown leaders who truly care about West Virginia.”

The AFT represents more than 16,000 education employees in West Virginia and is the largest union in the state. Nationally, the AFT represents 1.3 million pre-K through 12th-grade teachers, paraprofessionals and other school support employees, higher education faculty, nurses and other health care workers and state and local government employees. AFT is an affiliate of the AFL-CIO.
