A winter blast is expected to hit the Mountain State at one of the worst possible times for travelers, the day before Thanksgiving. They're already getting plans in place along the West Virginia Turnpike to try and keep traffic moving.

The Parkways Authority says historically the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year with an expected 48,000 vehicles on the turnpike that day, twice the amount of any other day. Coupled with the expected snow, it could be the perfect storm.

The Parkways Authority is tracking the storm from their command center and getting resources in place. In addition to all of the extra toll workers and courtesy patrols already scheduled for the holiday, they're also bringing in more state troopers, salt crews and wreckers which will be positioned along the turnpike.

Following the massive snow storm about four years ago which stranded drivers on the turnpike for hours, the Parkways Authority has added gates where drivers can turn around, detour routes and cameras along the highway. You can view those cameras and others around the state at www.WV511.org so you know what the roads look like before you head out.
