Deputies Say Man Shot By His Mother-In-Law While Trying To Attack His Wife

A Boone County man is recovering in the hospital after he was shot by his mother-in-law on Sunday.

This incident took place when Nathan Amick allegedly tried to attack his wife and mother in-law.

“He wouldn't leave,” Angela Petry, Amick’s sister-in-law, said. “He made a step toward her. He saw the gun, and she said, ‘don't come toward me.’ He wouldn't listen, so she shot him.”

Boone County Sheriff’ deputies said what started out as a domestic disturbance ended up with Amick getting shot in the stomach by his mother in-law Debbie Thompson.

Deputies said Amick had been at the home on Seng Creek Road earlier in the morning arguing with his wife, Jamie Amick. Law enforcement came and told him to leave and not to come back.

But deputies said he had been drinking, returned at about 6a.m. and broke into the home. Petry described what happened after her mother shot Amick.

“He came to her, even after he was shot and was choking mommy,” she said. “Mommy had already handed the gun to Jamie, from my understanding, and she said, ‘Nathan, I'll shoot you again. Let go of me. I can't breathe. I can't breathe.’ When he saw mom was serious, he fell over on a mattress in the living room.”

Here's what a neighbor had to say about the shooting:

“I mean, i probably would've done the same thing,” Heather Foley said. “You know, you’ve got to protect yourself, got to protect your kids. If somebody is trying to break into my house, I would do the same thing if they were going to attack me.”

Amick was taken to CAMC General and had surgery. A family member said, after five hours of surgery, he's facing a six- month recovery. Deputies said he will face burglary charges after he's released from the hospital.

As for Thompson, sheriff's deputies said she is not facing any criminal charges.

When he returned, the door was locked, and deputies say he forced his way into the house and tried to attack his wife. That's when deputies say the Amick's mother-in-law, Debbie Thompson picked up a gun and shot him once in the abdomen, investigators said.

Paramedics took Amick to the hospital.
