Sydney Doss has a true passion for reading.

"I like to read like chapter books that have excitement, and that you can kind of relate to, you can feel like they're almost talking about you," she said.

When her fourth grade class at Central City Elementary decided to do a "Read-A-Thon" to raise money for the Huntington City Mission this week, Doss knew it was right up her alley.

"That was exciting, because reading is something I love to do, and it made me feel good to help out and read at the same time, do something I love and do something to help," Doss said.

Fourth graders in Ms. Brianne Seplocha's class made flyers, gathered pledges and raised about $300. They used that money to go shopping for food and supplies to benefit the Huntington City Mission's Thanksgiving dinner, including vegetables, butter, milk, nuts and marshmallows.

They presented their donation to mission employees Friday afternoon. Theresa Cashion, public relations and volunteer coordinator for the mission, was there for the presentation.

"It was such a blessing. It was so amazing and I'm so proud of the children and the community that want to give back and help others," she said.

Ms. Seplocha said she couldn't be prouder of her students.

"It was a great experience for all of us, because I looked at it as I wanted them to learn something out of this about how to help others, but really it's inspired me to see how they help others and it makes me happy to see how selfless they are," she said.

She said they are already thinking about service projects for the future.
