Postal Service Warning

Huntington , Cabell County , West Virginia

After two letter carriers in Huntington were bitten on the job, the U.S. Postal Service has issued an appeal asking for people to make sure they restrain their dogs.

Dusty Reynolds is a letter carrier in Huntington, who's been bitten in the past while delivering mail.

"I was going through the yard and not paying much attention," he said. "The dog jumped on me and got me right in the stomach and I had to leave and go to the hospital for a tetanus shot."

The postmaster said if a customer doesn't keep his or her dog away from the front door or out of the path of a mail carrier, the customer's mail won't be delivered.

In the past couple weeks, two mail carriers were bitten and had to be treated at the hospital. One carrier had to have a tetanus shot. So now, the postmaster is warning all dog owners to keep their dogs in another room if customers usually greet the mail carrier at the door and to keep dogs out of the yard if they are able to approach the mail carrier.

"If you're going to the door, you need to make sure your put the dog in another room, so he can't slip out the door," Huntington Postmaster Lucas Peek said. "We've seen instances where a dog will jump through a glass storm door or even a screen door to get at a mail carrier."

Reynolds said he's glad the U.S.P.S. is warning customers.

"It makes it safer for us. We have to walk through a yard and have to miss a few houses or a street because a dog is chasing us down the street," he said.

Peek said if a letter carrier believes a customer's dog is a threat, the customer will be asked to pick up his or her mail at the post office.
