Wayne Voters Face Excess Levy On Ballot

Voters in Wayne County will face an excess levy this Saturday. The money would be used to maintain materials, pay utility bills and student programs in schools throughout the County.

This levy is separate from a bond levy. Superintendent Lynn Hurt says the excess levy is the same one that's been in place for more than 50 years and pretty much a continuation of what tax payers already pay. this levy is for 9 million dollars and about a million more than the last levy voters passed back in 2008.

Hurt says it must pass for the sake of the school system. "If this levy fails, we'll come back in here after Thanksgiving and we'll sit down at the drawing table and have to decide to make a lot of hard decision that concern personnel."

Talk of taxes even with the slightest increase, makes some voters uncomfortable.

Rudy Williamson says, "Money is tight, I know it's coming out of their pocket and hard to replace with so many jobs and things. The schools need it too. It's a tough situation really."

Sharon Pilbeam lives in Wayne and says, "I'd vote for it but a lot needs to be cut out and put in other areas."

According to the Tax Division of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, the levy is based on property value. For example, a 50 thousand dollar home would cost the homeowner about 140 dollars in taxes, which school leaders say would help the school system financially.

Early voting ends Wednesday, but voters can head to the polls all day Saturday.
