A home in Clendenin was badly damaged after fire ripped through the house Saturday night.
Neighbors watched as flames and smoke came pouring out of the home, but many are just thankful the people living there survived.
Clendenin, Frame and Pinch fire departments responded to the fire on Spencer Road just before 10 p.m.
“We were sitting in our house and, the next thing I know, my son was saying. ‘Mom I smell smoke,' “ a neighbor said. “Then all the sudden, we walked outside and we saw her house go up in flames."
Two people were home at the time of the fire. Crews said a grandson woke his grandmother up after hearing smoke alarms going off, and both were able to safely get out.
"We had smoke showing from every window,” Clendenin Volunteer Fire Department Cpt. Chris Avis said. “We determined the fire was in the basement. We made entry through the downstairs basement door.”
Avis credited the smoke detectors with saving the lives of the home’s residents.
“Smoke detectors are obviously critical in any fire, but really played a part in this one," he said.
Firefighters said they don't know how the fire started, and fire marshals will start working on the case. Firefighters contained the fire to the basement so the home only suffered some damage.
While the victims of this fire regroup and rebuild, neighbors said they will have the support they need.
"In a time of need like this, the family's pulling together, especially this close to the holidays, that's hard," one neighbor said.
