As the season of giving is in full swing, it didn't take a holiday for one little girl in our area to reach out and help others.
It's what she wanted for her birthday - not a present, but to give.
The event in Ravenswood looked like your typical birthday party and kids were running everywhere.
But what was unique is the party was a memorial to a little girl’s friends and family members who have fallen to a very deadly disease.
For Misty Pepper, decorating her daughter Jaylyn's birthday party was a little different this year.
"She's always been a child who would rather give than receive," she said.
That's why when Jaylyn was asked what she wanted for her birthday, she said nothing.
“I just don’t need,” she said. “I’d' rather give."
So for her ninth birthday, she did just that.
Her party was a massive toboggan and scarf drive, all to be donated to cancer patients needing to keep warm during treatment.
Helping others is a gift to her. After seeing her first grade teacher battle breast cancer, she also lost her grandpa to cancer a few months ago.
And Misty Pepper is one proud mom.
"It makes me feel like I am doing something right,” she said. “I was really pleased with the love she's giving to other people."
The gift of giving, started by one little girl, motivated an entire community.
"If we can inspire others to do a bit of good...that's a wonderful thing,” Misty Pepper said.
Several hundred toboggans have been donated so far. They will be taken to the cancer center at CAMC in Charleston.
