Athens , Athens County , Ohio

Rozella Brown made the decision that she wasn't going to be a victim without putting up a fight.

“I happened to see a figure,” the 83-year-old woman told WSYX in Columbus, Ohio. “A little kid crawling across my kitchen floor."

Brown didn't hesitate to defend what is rightfully hers. Using her cane, she sprang into action to ward off an unwanted intruder.

It all happened about noon Monday at Brown’s Athens, Ohio, home just off Bessemer Road.

Brown said she was watching TV when the real drama began to unfold inside her kitchen.

The suspect was able to make off with Brown's wallet with $100 inside. But she didn't back down, continuing to beat the intruder with her cane until he was outside.

“I was shocked,” she said.

Brown’s husband, John, wasn't home at the time and was upset to learn about his wife’s run-in.

The suspect got away, but not before Brown beat his name out of him

"I kept asking him his name and what he wanted,” she said. “He said his name was Austin."

As deputies search for the battered burglar, Brown stands by her decision to defend her home and herself and said she is grateful that she is alive to share her story.

Athens County deputies are still searching for the suspect in this case.

Brown described the suspect as a "school aged" male of average height and weight. He was wearing a gray corduroy hooded jacket and blue jeans at the time of the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Athens County deputies.
