A new "As Seen on TV" product claims to keep cats of all ages occupied for hours and out of their owner's hair.

The Cat's Meow claims it's the toy your cat can't resist. The motorized wand with a nylon cover appears to mimic the action of a scurrying rodent. Eyewitness News tested out the gadget with three cats at the Putnam County Animal Shelter.

The product's box claimed assembly was easy. But Putnam County chief humane officer Jon Davis said that was not the case.

"It was surprisingly difficult," Davis said. "We had problems attaching the cover. It said you just need to turn the little cap and take it off, and we had difficulty just getting that off."

The $20 gadget also required batteries, which called for special tools just to put them in the product.

"We needed a screw driver to get into the battery compartment. It was a rather small screw," Davis said.

After eight minutes, Davis decided to improvise by cutting the gadget's cover. Once on, the first cat, a male Tabby, could now play. The Cat's Meow only sparked the cat's curiosity but not enough to want to play.

A female Siamese cat seemed less interested in the toy as she was of what was happening outside of the shelter's window. The third feline, a kitten, was frightened by the gadget and ran under a couch.

"They say its the toy that cats can't resist, and we had three cats that resisted it," Davis said.

The chief humane officer said for that reason, he could not recommend the product.

Eyewitness News also tested the product in a different setting and received varying results. We allowed two cats to play with the product in the comfort of their home and it was a hit.
