Clendenin , Kanawha County , West Virginia

A Clendenin mother is arrested after police say her boyfriend was found dead of an apparent drug overdose, and drug needles were found around their toddler's bed.

Melissa Putillion, 22, is charged with child neglect creating risk of injury.

The child is almost two years old, according to family members and is now in the care of Child Protective Services.

Children's toys are still scattered around a home on Maywood Avenue that police say was anything buy a safe place for kids.

"It hurts me because it happened in my home but like I said, when my granddaughter doesn't have a place to stay and she wants to stay, I'm not going to say, 'go,'" says Loretta Putillion.

Her granddaughter was arrested Friday after police were called to the home because Melissa's boyfriend, Chad Elmore, was found dead in a bedroom.

"I can deal with adults making stupid decisions on themselves and killing themselves, but when you're doing that around a little child who has no clue as to the danger, has no clue as to how to do something right or wrong," says Clendenin Chief David Brinckman.

Police say needles and syringes were found around Elmore's body, but also on and underneath their toddler son's mattress in the bedroom. Putillion told police she and Elmore had injected heroin, took Roxycodone pills, and smoked marijuana that evening.

"Never dreamed that this was going on back here, and I know a lot of people think, a little trailer like that, so close, when you're sick like me and stuff you're not watching somebody for drugs. You're just happy that God lets you get up and maybe come out here and get yourself a bite to eat or something, you're not thinking about drugs in your back room," says Loretta Putillion.

Police say they are actively working to track down the person who sold the couple the drugs, and if it's determined Elmore died from an overdose, they plan to charge that person in connection with his death.

"It's not case closed, if that's how he passed away, I'm going after that person who sold those drugs," says Chief Brinckman.

Michelle Putillion told police the couple had been buying heroin from a woman in Pinch. So far, that alleged dealer has not been located.

A Clendenin woman faces drug charges after drug paraphernalia was found with her boyfriend’s dead body and on her infant child’s bed, court documents said.

Clendenin police said they found Chad Elmore’s body in a back bedroom on Friday at 612 Maywood Avenue with several syringes and needles near his body and on a baby bed in the room, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

Police said they began talking to Elmore’s girlfriend, Melissa May Putillion, 22, of Clendenin, who has a child with Elmore. She acknowledged that she had injected heroin earlier in the day and had taken two Roxicodone pills and smoked marijuana in the evening, the complaint said. Police said they found a needle and syringe on the mattress of the infant and one underneath the mattress. There also were numerous needles and other drug paraphernalia in the infant’s room.

Child Protective Services was contacted, and the infant was removed and placed into state custody.

The complaint said Putillion told officers that Elmore had been purchasing heroin from a female in Pinch twice a week for at least a year.

Putillion was charged with child neglect with risk of injury.
