Marlinton , West Virginia

A fire has destroyed three buildings in downtown Marlinton. It is still burning. The danger of a wall falling has made it too dangerous to send firefighters or fire investigators inside. A major rekindle happened about 11 Monday morning.

Media outlets report that the fire began around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Marlinton Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Curtis Helton tells the Charleston Gazette that one firefighter suffered minor injuries.

WVVA-TV reports that the fire displaced seven businesses, along with 13 families who lived in apartments in the buildings.

Helton says about 10 fire departments from Pocahontas County and surrounding counties fought the fire. He says the federal prison in Alderson also sent a firefighting crew of inmates.

A fund has been set up for the families displaced by the fire. Donations in the form of checks or money orders can be made to the Marlinton Fire Fund at Pendleton Community Bank, P.O. Box 87, Marlinton, WV.

Firefighters are on the scene of a large fire in downtown Marlinton.

Firefighters say the fire has spread to three buildings.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire.

At this time, there are no reported injuries.
