An elderly woman has died in a house fire in Wayne County. The fire was reported about 10 a.m. Tuesday on Paddle Creek in Fort Gay.
The woman's son was severely burned after a rescue attempt, a Prichard firefighter said. The state Fire Marshal's Office said the woman was bedfast.
Assistant Fire Marshal Shawn Alderman said, "From what I understand she was confined to bed, but was able to stand on her own, that was it, she needed assistance to mobile."
Alice Marcum lives in the area and knew the victim. "She's a sweet old woman, her son, I know her son and it's so sad something lie this would happen. May the Lord bless the family and see them through all of this."
The son was being treated for smoke inhalation at Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa, Ky. The name of the woman and her son are not being released at this time. The fire is still under investigation.
The West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a fatal fire in Wayne County.
The fire happened about 10 a.m. Tuesday on Paddle Creek in Fort Gay. It is not known at this time how many victims are involved or the cause of the fire.
