A trial began Monday in Kanawha Circuit Court for a man accused of setting his estranged wife's house on fire in June.
Clinton Simpson is charged with first-degree arson.
Police said they got a call about a fire in the 600 block of Randolph Street about 3 a.m. June 22. Dispatchers told officers the woman who lived in the home said Simpson was pouring gasoline around the house. When officers got on scene, the woman and her daughter said Simpson was behind the home. Officers went around the house and saw the back porch engulfed in flames.
Firefighters were able to put the fire out, but police said Simpson ran away. Officers were able to take him into custody.
In court on Monday, prosecutors were calling witnesses to the stand, including a man who said he heard Simpson say, "I'll burn this (expletive) down." During testimony in court, a witness said Simpson thought his wife was having an affair, which she disputed.
