Workforce West Virginia is helping displaced coal miners get back on their feet.
The state received a $1.8 million grant from the federal government to help retrain laid off miners and get them working again.
Any miner laid off since March 1, 2012 is eligible.
Miners, their spouses and family members can get up to $5,000 for training.
"We want to get them back into the workforce,” Veronica Comer of Workforce West Virginia said. “Lots of time training is critical for them because they may have been in the mines for years."
Glenn Turley, an HVAC student, said he is thankful for the training.
"I've tried to take advantage of it,” he said. “I think it's a good opportunity to learn more, and I've always wanted a college degree. This has given me a chance to do that."
The next chance for miners to sign up is Tuesday at Summersville City Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
