Human remains were discovered in Logan County on Sunday.

An abandoned four-wheeler was found and police were called. When officers arrived, they uncovered skeletal remains.

Police said a woman on her way to church spotted the abandoned four-wheeler near Henlawson.

Once on the scene, police also discovered the remains, which they believe could be linked to a missing man case in the county.

James Marcum, 44, went missing in June after family members say he left his home on his ATV, which matched the one found at the scene. Marcum never returned..

Marcum's sister spoke with Eyewitness News about the possibility of this ending her brother's missing person case.

“We all know, from everything that was found, it's my brother,” Darla Gearhart said.

It was a bittersweet discovery for Gearhart. Her brother was last seen riding his red Honda 300 Foretrax ATV, heading toward Mill Creek.

Deputies said the ATV and body had been hidden by brush and foliage.

“Nothing but a forest here, until the first frost,” Cpl. M.C. Sutherland, with the Logan County Sheriff’s office, said. “The winds knocked all this off. Actually, there was a haunted house here on the same area and nobody noticed it.”

The remains will be sent to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., where an anthropologist will confirm the identity of the person.

While police aren't confirming the remains are Marcum, Gearhart said she believes there's no question it's her brother.

“(It’s) a little bit of relief, because it's been five months tomorrow,” she said. “Just hoping for closure. Been a rough morning.”

Deputies said it could take a few weeks to a few months to get results back from the anthropologist, depending on his caseload.

The scene was cleared by police, but it could mean the end of a missing man case.

Deputies believe the remains might be linked to a missing person, James Marcum, 44, who disappeared in June.

Marcum left his house on a red Honda 300 Foretrax ATV, heading toward Mill Creek, and never returned.

The ATV found matches the description of the one Marcum owned, but investigators cannot confirm if the remains found are that of a man or a woman and were not saying if there was any indication of foul play.

The West Virginia Medical Examiner's office has been on scene with the sheriff's department and the skeletal remains will be sent to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., where an anthropologist will confirm the identity of the person.
