Winfield , Putnam County , West Virginia
Powerful winds early Friday morning sent a double carport on an amazing flight through a Winfield neighborhood and knocked down trees in Putnam County.
Winfield Avenue sustained the most serious damage. Dale Lewis’ carport was ripped from its location and ended up precariously balanced on top of the roof of Roy Young’s home.
“I was asleep,” Young said. “I climbed out of bed at 3:30. I looked out the window and I said, ‘What’s on the roof?’ When I looked, there was a carport.”
The strong storm also knocked over a tree and power lines, blocking Winfield Avenue. It took a couple of hours for the power company to confirm the lines were dead so they could cut away and remove the tree.
While some neighborhoods escaped with just some downed tree limbs and leaves, the double dose of heavy rain and powerful winds left a mess on Winfield Avenue.
