With lots of pomp and circumstance, the completion of the new Dick Henderson Memorial Bridge was celebrated Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The ceremony featured remarks by a number of officials including Nitro Mayor Dave Casebolt, St. Albans Mayor Richard Callaway, Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper, U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin and Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin.
A worker cut a chain with a blowtorch to mark the completion of the eagerly awaited project. The old bridge was demolished, and it took 10 months to complete the new bridge, which connects the communities of Nitro and St. Albans.
The ceremony celebrating the completion of the $24 million project included lots of special guests and festivities. The Nitro and St. Albans high school bands performed the “National Anthem,” and the ROTC Color Guards from Nitro and St. Albans high schools were there for the presentation of the colors.
Two 1934 vehicles symbolically drove VIP guests and Lorraine Henderson, the widow of the bridge’s namesake, Dick Henderson, off of the bridge.
