Redhouse , Putnam County , West Virginia
A new animal shelter opened its doors Thursday morning in Redhouse after eight years of planning.
The Putnam County Animal Shelter was previously known as the Putnam County Animal Relief Center, which was located in Winfield. The new facility is located on W.Va. 62 near the Winfield Bridge. The facility is home to eight cats and 20 dogs.
The $2.5 million facility has a separate entrance for incoming animals and ones for adoption. There is also an area to quarantine, spay and neuter.
The building is 10,000 square feet and sits on 10 acres of land. Jon Davis, Putnam County chief humane officer, said the larger space allows the shelter to accommodate more animals, keep them longer and euthanize less.
"With the bigger facilities, now we'll be able to hold animals a lot longer than before," Davis said. "We're about three times the size we were before. We make every effort to find a good home if we can."
If you'd like to adopt an animal, you must be a Putnam County resident and be able to show proof of address.
