A school official said Thursday two volleyball players at Winfield High School have been diagnosed as having the MRSA staph infection and areas of the school have been sanitized to stop any further spread of the infection.
The school official said volleyball practice was canceled at the beginning of the week because of the MRSA discovery, and the girls went to a doctor for treatment.
As a precautionary measure, the school’s gymnasium and bleachers were sanitized.
The Centers of Disease Control said MRSA is a very common germ that about one out of every three people have on their skin or in their nose. This germ does not cause any problems for most people who have it on their skin, but sometimes it can cause serious infections such as skin or wound infections, pneumonia, or infections of the blood. Antibiotics are given to kill staph germs when they cause infections, the Centers for Disease Control said.
