U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., will vote in support of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
Manchin now joins the other 53 members of the Senate’s Democratic Caucus in backing the bill, which is geared toward eliminating discrimination of employees based on sexual orientation of gender identity.
The bill is expected to come to the Senate for a vote in the next few weeks.
Fairness West Virginia, a statewide advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, praised Manchin for his position on the bill.
"We are proud to see Sen. Joe Manchin standing on the right side of history and standing up for the values of equality and fairness,” the group said in a news release Wednesday. “His support on ENDA is a huge victory for Fairness West Virginia, and we thank him for his leadership on this critical issue.”
West Virginia’s senior U.S. senator, Jay Rockefeller, is one of the bill’s co-sponsors. Four Republicans have also announced their support of the legislation, bringing the number of senators supporting the bill to 59, just one vote short of the 60 required to break a filibuster.
