Former Maryland Republican chair Alex Mooney has secured the backing of a major conservative organization in the race to fill the U.S. House seat being vacated by Republican Shelley Moore Capito.
The Citizens United Political Victory Fund announced its endorsement of Mooney in a news release on Wednesday.
"I am honored to be endorsed by Citizens United," Mooney said. "Citizens United is a conservative organization that stands up for the same conservative values we West Virginians hold dear: limited government, fiscal responsibility, and traditional values.”
Mooney was a Maryland state senator from 1999 to 2011. He was chosen as chair of the state’s Republican Party in 2010.
Mooney explored a run against Maryland’s U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett in 2010, but backed out. He moved to West Virginia earlier this year to pursue a run for Capito’s seat in 2014.
The Citizens United Political Victory Fund is a separate, affiliated fund of Citizens United, a national conservative advocacy organization which has backed conservative candidates and primary challengers in key races across the country.
Citizens United is best known for its involvement in the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission ruling by the Supreme Court, which allowed for unlimited spending in elections by corporations and special interest groups.
