Three college students including two former University of Charleston basketball players avoided going to prison for a violent street mugging that nearly left a South Charleston man dead in the spring.
Terrell Lipkins, Robert Dreher and Tim Schmachtenberger were all ordered to the Anthony Center for youthful offenders Wednesday, for their roles in the April beating and robbery of Andrew Rude and Patrick Morrison on a downtown Charleston street.
The men could complete the program in as little as nine months.
Rude who was treated in the intensive care unit for two days after the attack, did not object to the sentences.
The South Charleston man who attended UC was surprised when he learned the identities of the attackers.
All three of the men charged were apologetic. The judge warned the men they could face significant time if they failed at the Anthony Center. He told Lipkins that he could spend 11 years in prison, Dreher that he could get one-to five years and Schmachtenberger that he could do 10 years.
Quincy Washington, another former University of Charleston athlete, who was charged with beating Rude, was sentenced to two to 10 years in prison in court on Tuesday.
